(although I think a regular Leopard will be fine too). Therefore, without delaying my promises, I will try to describe in sufficient detail the entire process from beginning to end.

Looking ahead, I want to say that the virtual system is not intended for full-fledged “life” in, but you can get acquainted with the OS or, for example, develop applications for the iPhone without any problems.

What do we need?

Before we begin the installation itself, we need to get these “puzzle pieces”:

  • PC computer with a processor that supports SSE3 instructions. I don’t know how it is on AMD, but everything installed perfectly.
  • (Linux). To be honest, I have not tested the functionality of Linux, but in theory it should work too. Is there VMware for that too? 🙂
  • An image made from the original Mac OS X disk, or regular Leopard: this could be a boxed version, a $9.99 update disk for Macs purchased after June of last year, or any other non-image. You can borrow such a disk from a friend who is a Mac driver or from the Internet (about 8 GB).
  • Paid version of VMWare Workstation (preferably version seven) or free.
  • Virtual machine image (approximately 13 MB). You can find it on the Internet search or on special file storages: , . I checked, both links are working.
  • Some archiver for Windows that works with bzip2 archives, in which a virtual machine image is packed (for example, winrar or free 7-zip).

Once you have obtained all the necessary components, you can begin the installation process itself.

Installation

First of all, we need to install software from VMware on the computer and unpack the downloaded archive Snowy_Vmware_files.tbz2 containing the following structure:

  • Directory Mac OS X Server 10.6 (experimental).vmwarevm - configured virtual machine.
  • darwin_snow.iso - a very necessary boot disk + VMWare Tools.
  • EnsoniqAudioPCI.mpkg.tar.gz - archive with sound driver.
  • Install Notes - a file with a description in English.

Now we must launch VMware Workstation (or Player) and through the File->Open menu (or through the icon in the main program window) add our created virtual machine from the Mac OS X Server 10.6 (experimental).vmwarevm directory.

Next, go to the tab with the virtual machine that appears and find “Edit virtual machine settings” among the commands. Depending on the computer configuration, you can choose the amount of virtual memory, hard disk space, number of processors and cores, local network type, sound card, and so on*.

*At first, I allowed the use of 2 GB of RAM out of 3 GB available in the system, but during installation the computer froze and I had to “hard” reboot it, so do not overestimate the capabilities of the system, choose the parameters “wisely”.

Remember, in the unpacked archive we had the file darwin_snow.iso? This is what you need to use in the virtual CD/DVD drive. Be sure to check the “Connect at power on” checkbox so that the image is automatically connected when the system starts. That's it, we are completely ready to install the system, you can turn on the virtual computer.

When turned on, the system can go into one of three states:

  • a suggestion to insert a DVD (I had this yesterday);
  • reading error EBIOS read error: Error 0x31 Block 0 Sector 4 (today this error constantly pops up);
  • menu from boot options (this also happened yesterday);

You should not pay attention to this, because now you need to replace darwin_snow.iso, located in the virtual drive, with the image. To do this, you can press Ctrl+D (or the VM->Settings menu) and select CD/DVD from the list, then specify the path to the MacOS image and be sure to check another “Connecter” checkbox (it will be unchecked). If there was a boot menu on the screen, then you should press the key with the Latin letter “c” on the keyboard; in other cases, the virtual machine will think for a few seconds and proceed to boot the installation disk without anyone’s help.

Within a minute or a minute and a half, a language selection window will appear on the screen and you can begin installing the system. All that remains is to accept the license agreement and select installation options. For example, I don’t need printer drivers or additional localizations, so I removed unnecessary checkboxes from the list.

Launch and testing

Great, as I said, everything ended faster - exactly 16 minutes passed. We reboot the virtual machine (ignore Kernel Panic) and go through the system registration process. I won't dwell on this because everything is very easy there. If the system doesn’t start the first time, it’s okay, and I don’t have to do it every time, and some even reboot VMware 5-10 times until they achieve a positive result.

Upon completion of registration (when the desktop appears on the screen), replace the image back to darwin_snow.iso, because it contains VMware Tools, they also need to be installed, which will make it possible, for example, to change the screen resolution or exchange files between two operating systems.

All. Now we have a ready-made and almost completely “working” system. Why did I put the word “working” in quotation marks? Because the problem with freezes at the boot stage can await you even now: do not forget to mount the darwin_snow.iso image every time you turn on the virtual machine. Also, ACPI does not work quite correctly (I would even say that it works extremely poorly 🙂).

In general, in this simple way I installed Snow Leopard on VMware, without doing shamanic dances with a tambourine, hackintosh, etc.

I forgot to add one more thing. Naturally, it would be naive to believe that a guest system (and even on such a not super-powerful computer) will be an adequate replacement for a full-fledged Macintosh. However, any user will be able to “touch” OSX, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and draw some conclusions for themselves.

Mac OS is an excellent platform with a beautiful interface, interesting design, and other wonderful advantages. But not everyone has the opportunity to use it, since not everyone can pay $1000 for their favorite computer. Especially the user who has only heard about Apple computers. Also, the fact that most games are not released for Mac may turn off younger audiences.

But in order to get to know Apple computers better, it is enough to install the Mac OS operating system on a VMware or Virtual Box virtual machine. True, such an OS will work well only for owners of sufficiently powerful computers. By a powerful computer I mean something like this:

  • Intel Core 2 2.4 gigahertz and higher.
  • RAM from 4 gigabytes.
  • And, of course, a powerful gaming video card.

All we need is to download the virtual machine and the Mac OS disk image. I want to assure you that this does not apply to the piracy section, since the official Apple website states that the disc is multi-user.

Unfortunately, I cannot give direct links, but I will tell you under what words you can find what we need. Mac OS X 10.6 VMware By typing these words in a search engine, you will be offered many options, but the surest option is still to take the Mac operating system from friends, if of course you have any.

After installation, we should open the image and launch our long-awaited Mac OS X, select the apple on the boot screen and wait for it to load. After a five-minute wait (depending on RAM), our Macintosh appears in front of us in all its glory.

But I won’t bore you and present the final result of our simple actions:

After all your efforts and diligence, you can sit down with peace of mind and enjoy this miracle. But there are a lot of problems with using Mac OS X and Windows at the same time, for example, if you actively use your real operating system, then the second one launched through a virtual machine will be very slow. I advise you to disable all active and high-capacity applications before and during use.

Of course, no one can guarantee that slowdowns will bypass you. And using this option for frequent use of Mac OS X is not a good idea. But let's not talk about sad things, but let's move on to the main features.

Despite my recommendation, the Apple operating system hardly slows down even on computers with 2 gigabytes of RAM. But still, not using anything while you are behind this wonderful system is quite difficult.

Even if you're a longtime Windows fan, you've probably thought about trying Apple's rival OS X at some point. Perhaps you wanted to try out OS X before deciding to switch to a Mac, or perhaps you are planning to build a Hackintosh yourself, or maybe you just want to run some of the applications under Mac OS X directly on your PC . Well, whatever the reason, you can easily install and run OS X on any PC with an Intel processor. And a wonderful program called VirtualBox will help us with this.

Installing and running OS X on Windows is not a difficult task and will not take you much time. However, the end result will pleasantly surprise you.

So what do we need

Before we begin installation, make sure that your computer meets the system requirements and that you have prepared everything you need:

  • Computer with 64-bit Windows on board (Mountain Lion is a 64-bit system, so Windows should be the same), at least 2-core processor And 4 GB RAM. If you use a 32-bit OS, don’t worry, you can install Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
  • VirtualBox : VirtualBox is our favorite virtualization program for Windows and it's completely free. We've already used VirtualBox to increase space on Dropbox. Keep in mind that if you need support for USB ports inside OS X, you will also need to download the VirtualBox Extension Pack.
  • Mountain Lion special ISO image. Unfortunately, the standard method (which uses an officially purchased Mountain Lion installer) for installing OS X Mountain Lion will not work here. Instead, you will need a jailbroken version of OS X, also called distribution. The Olarila hacker team has posted a ton of ISO installers online, so you can easily find them on Google or any torrent tracker and download them using a torrent client.
  • and - ISO files. Hackboot 1 will help us launch the OS X installer, and Hackboot 2, in turn, will help us launch Mountain Lion itself.
  • MultiBeast 4 – which will ensure the correct functioning of audio and other functions. To download it, register at Tonymacx86.com. It's free.

Step One: Installing and Configuring VirtualBox

Before installing OS X, we need to configure VirtualBox so that our installation file can work correctly:

    1. Launch VirtualBox and click Create. In the window that appears, enter the name of your virtual machine (I simply named it “Mac OS X”). In the tab Type select Mac OS X, and in the next tab Version– Mac OS X (64 bit).

  1. Click Forward. Now we need to decide how much RAM we are ready to allocate for the needs of our virtual machine. It all depends on how much RAM you have installed on your computer. You can allocate 2GB - this will be quite enough, but if you have enough RAM (for example, 8 or 16 gigabytes), then it is better not to be greedy and allocate more. 4 or 6 GB are the best options.
  2. Click again Forward and select the item Create a new virtual hard disk. Create your new disk in VDI format and with dynamically allocated space. When you're done, VirtualBox should return you to the home screen.
  3. Now right-click on our just created virtual machine and select Tune. Go to the tab System and uncheck the box Enable EFI(if you have it checked).
  4. Next we go to the section Carriers. Click on the CD icon with the inscription Empty, which is in the panel Information carriers. Then click on the CD icon, but this one is on the right and select the item. Select the HackBoot 1 ISO file that we downloaded earlier and click OK.

Your virtual machine is now ready for installation. Make sure you have the correct Mountain Lion ISO image and move on to the next step.

Step Two: Install OS X in VirtualBox

The next step involves directly installing OS X on your virtual machine. When you are ready to install, launch VirtualBox and follow the instructions below:

    1. In the left pane, select your virtual OS X system and click Launch. Next, the HackBoot loading screen will appear with an icon in the middle.

    1. Click on the CD icon at the very bottom of the VirtualBox window and select Select optical disk image. Select the hacked Mountain Lion ISO image downloaded earlier.

    1. Return to the HackBoot loading screen and press F5. The window should reload and display this time OS X Install DVD. Select and press Enter. After a while, you will be redirected to the OS X installation window.
    2. After you select your language and agree to the terms of use, you will see that OS X cannot detect any hard drives of a valid format. To solve this problem, go to the top menu and select Utilities > Disk Utility.

    1. The fact is that Mac OS X can only be installed on a completely clean hard drive. Therefore you need to use Disk Utility to clean up the virtual hard disk you created in VirtualBox for Mountain Lion. So, being in Disk Utility, select our HDD from VirtualBox and clean it.

  1. Once Disk Utility has finished formatting, a formatted drive should appear in the left sidebar. You can then exit Disk Utility and continue installing OS X.

Further installation is quite simple and should not cause you any difficulties. The entire OS X installation process took us only about 20 minutes. When the installation process is complete, a black window with white text should appear in front of you. Once the installation of Mountain Lion has successfully completed, you can click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the window, thereby shutting down the virtual machine.

Step three: make it beautiful

We're at the finish line! We've already installed OS X on PC, but we still need to tweak a few things to get our graphics and audio features to work properly. So here's what we need to do.

Fixing an audio bug using MultiBeast

    1. Launch VirtualBox. In the left panel we find our virtual OS X and right-click on it. Select an item Tune and go to the section already familiar to us Carriers. Click on the disk icon located on the right side of the window and select the HackBoot 2 ISO file.
    2. Click the Run button to reboot your virtual machine. After this, the HackBoot menu will appear in front of you again, but this time with the option to boot your new virtual OS. Select it and press Enter.

    1. In a minute or two you will see the signature Mountain Lion desktop screensaver. Open the Safari browser, go to Tonymacx86.com and download MultiBeast as described in the section What do we need.
    2. Opening System Settings > Protection and safety. Click on the lock in the lower left corner of the window, enter your password and in the subsection Allow downloads of programs from: put From any source. This will allow us to run MultiBeast on our Mac OS X.
    3. Launch Multibeast. When you get to the point Installation type, check the boxes as shown in the screenshot below. Click continue and wait for the Multibeast installation to complete. The installation process may take several minutes.

Our audio features aren't working yet, so we need to do a couple more things.

Launching OS X without HackBoot

So, in order to boot our OS X without the help of HackBoot, we need to delete the problematic kext file.

      1. Open Finder and select Transition > Go to folder.
        Type in /System/Library/Extensions and press Enter.
      2. Find the AppleGraphicsControl.kext file in this folder and delete it. This will allow our virtual machine to boot without the HackBoot iso file.

      1. Next, remove the HackBoot CD; To do this, right-click on the CD icon in the lower right part of the VirtualBox window and uncheck HackBoot, since we won’t need it anymore. Restart the virtual machine. Now your Mac OS X can boot normally and play audio fully. Congratulations!

Setting the screen resolution for the virtual machine

You may have noticed that our VirtualBox is running at a fairly low resolution. Naturally, we are not happy with this, so let's make a couple more settings so that the VM runs at the same resolution as our monitor.

      1. Again in the Finder, select the item Transition > Go to folder and go to /Extra/. Double click on the file org.Chameleon.boot.plist and add between the tags And, the following lines:
        Graphics Mode
        1920x1080x32
        Save the file and close TextEdit. This will allow OS X to run at a higher resolution. Keep in mind that you can set any resolution you want, just replace 1920×1080 to the resolution you need.

      1. If you set the resolution to greater than 1280x1024, there is one more thing you need to do to make sure everything works correctly. Shut down your virtual machine and open Windows command line. Enter the following commands, pressing Enter after each:
        cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
        vboxmanage setextradata "MyVirtualMachine" "CustomVideoMode1"
        "1920x1080x32"
        In the first line, specify the path to the VirualBox folder on your computer. In the second line, replace MyVirtualMachine with the name you gave your virtual machine (in our case, Mac OS X), and finally 1920x1080x32 with the resolution you specified in the first paragraph in the Chameleon plist file.

When finished, reboot your virtual OS X and enjoy high resolution and working audio features. Now you can install your favorite apps, customize your keyboard and mouse, and do whatever you want. So now you have a fully working virtual OS X Mountain Lion right on your Windows computer!

VMware Tools for MAC OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Actually, sound and network work without installing VMware Tools, but for better performance you need to install VMware Tools. This will improve graphics, allow you to create a shared folder for OS X and Windows, synchronize time, improve mouse and touchpad performance, and also allow you to open the virtual machine in full screen.

Step 6: Install VMware Tools

Download VMware Tools (darwin.iso) and unpack it.

MacBook owners face several problems when switching from Windows to MacOS. And if the problem of getting used to the keyboard can be solved relatively painlessly, then with familiar applications everything is much sadder.

Although MacOS is a successful and thriving software, some programs still exist only on Windows. If you want to use some commercial software or play computer games written for Windows, there are several ways to run such programs on your Mac device.

Virtual machines

You can run a Windows application on a Mac without restarting your computer by using a virtual machine program. For maximum performance that some games require, it is recommended to dual boot Windows using Boot Camp.

A virtual machine allows you to install Windows and other operating systems on your Mac. In this case, Windows will think that the work is being done on a regular computer, when in fact it is part of the software on your Mac.

There is no need to use the Windows program in the virtual machine window - it can be extracted to display on the desktop of your MacBook. At the same time, programs continue to run in the background inside the virtual machine.

To install Windows in a virtual machine, you will need a license. If you already have a product key, you can download Windows installation media for free and run it in a virtual machine program.

Some of the most popular Mac machines are Parallels and VMware Fusion. Both programs are paid, so to install them you will have to buy both a Windows license and a copy of the virtual machine you choose. You can also use the free program VirtualBox for Mac, but its 3D graphics support and integration with the Mac operating system are not so good. Both Parallels and VMW offer a free trial, so you can try either program and see which one is best for you.

For lovers of cheap solutions: according to reviews, Parallels integration with macOS is beyond praise, and the speed is so high that VirtualBox remains far behind. In the long term, this program completely pays for itself.

Virtual machines have one major drawback: 3D graphics performance leaves much to be desired, so they are not the best option for running Windows games on a Mac. No, games, of course, will run - especially older versions - but you shouldn't expect anything supernatural: many, especially new games, simply won't work.

Boot Camp

Apple's Boot Camp allows you to install Windows alongside MacOS on your Mac. Only one operating system can be running at a time, so you'll have to restart your Mac to switch between macOS and Windows. If you've ever dual booted Linux and Windows, this works the same way.

Installing Windows as the actual operating system on your Mac is a great idea if you want to run Windows games or use performance-intensive applications.

The downside to this option is the fact that you cannot use macOS and Windows applications at the same time. If you want to play the latest version of your favorite Windows game on your Mac, then Boot Camp is perfect. But if you want to run both a Mac application and a Windows application at the same time, then it is better to use a virtual machine.

Just like with a virtual machine, installing Windows on your Mac will require a license.

Wine

Wine is a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to function on other operating systems. Essentially, Wine is an attempt to rewrite Windows application code so that it can run on other operating systems. This means that Wine is far from perfect. It doesn't work for every Windows application, and running programs will have many bugs. Wine AppDB can give you some idea of ​​the supported applications.

Either way, Wine is one way you can try running a Windows application on a Mac. You won't need a Windows license to operate it, since the application doesn't require you to actually use one. Moreover, it is completely free. Simply download Wine or WineBottler for macOS and see if it works well with your application.

CrossOver Mac

CodeWeavers CrossOver Mac is a paid application that runs Windows programs on a Mac. It uses the open source Wine to do this, but CrossOver provides a nice graphical interface and specializes in official support for popular programs. If an officially supported program does not work for some reason, then you can contact the CodeWeavers office and let them know, after which they will do their best to make the program work. CodeWeavers makes all sorts of improvements to the Wine project, so by purchasing this program you are helping to further develop the project.

CrossOver offers a free trial that you can try before purchasing the paid version. You can also view a list of programs that work well with this program.

Many people will be happy if they don't have to deal with virtual machines and purchasing a Windows license. However, it is still worth considering that using a virtual machine will allow you to use almost any Windows program and avoid many errors that may appear while using CrossOver. And although CrossOver theoretically allows you to run Windows computer games on a Mac with better performance than a virtual machine, in the case of CrossOver you risk encountering errors and unsupported programs. Therefore, perhaps, Boot Camp will still be the best solution in this case.

Remote Desktop

If you already have a Windows system, then there is no need to completely install Windows software on your Mac. To access your Windows computer, you can simply use remote desktop software. A home PC user who also has a Windows PC can configure it for remote access and connect to it whenever a Windows application is needed. It is worth considering that this option is not well suited for graphically heavy applications, such as computer games.

If you use Chrome, you can even use the Chrome Remote Desktop app to connect to a Windows computer from your Mac.

All of these options definitely require more time and effort than simply installing a Windows program on a Windows PC. If you have a Mac OS, it's best to use Mac software as much as possible where possible, as Windows programs aren't likely to be as well integrated.
