If your computer has one or more NVIDIA GPU-based video cards, you probably regularly update its drivers by following the pop-up prompts in the GeForce Experience program. But did you know that with every new version of the driver that you download and install, the temporary files needed to install the driver remain on your hard drive after installation?
But that is not all. GeForce Experience retains a library of files from all previous installations in case you want to roll back to a previous driver version. Each time you install a new version of the driver, if the “perform a clean install” checkbox is unchecked, the installation files will be added to the library each time. Last but not least, GeForce Experience always saves a copy of the automatically downloaded drivers in a separate directory.

So how do you get rid of unnecessary files?

The answer is quite simple. All you have to do is remove them! Deleting these files is a safe procedure and will not affect the performance of your graphics card in any way. Below is a detailed description of all the steps to find and delete unnecessary files.

Step 1
First of all, you need to find out where the unnecessary files are located after installation. Typically, they can be found in the following path:
C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\

You will see that each driver version has its own directory, which in turn contains installation files. Feel free to delete all files from the DisplayDriver folder!

Step 2
There's one, two left. The next place where you will need to delete files is the GeForce Experience download folder. It can be found in the following path:
C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\Netservice\

There you will find several folders and .exe type files with the NVIDIA logo as an icon. Delete only .exe files with the NVIDIA icon!

Step 3
The third and final place GeForce Experience places files is in the Driver Library. You can find it at:
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Installer2\

Just delete all the files inside the Installer2 directory, BUT do not delete the folder itself!

But you can also archive it all and throw it on a flash drive, or just throw it, you never know, all of a sudden you’ll need to install the drivers again =)

How to accurately check whether eSupport can be deleted or not? Okay, there is an option. You need to rename the folder, for example, to eSupport_, and if there are no errors, that is, you calmly rename it, then leave this matter for a couple of days. If the computer works as before for a couple of days, then the folder can be deleted immediately, or copied to a flash drive, after all, the drivers...

After installing some programs and drivers, strange directories may appear in the root directory of the system drive C:. These include Intel folder, which is created due to the installation of drivers for the processor and other components. As a rule, although users pay attention to it, they believe that it is systemic and should not be touched, although this directory can be deleted.


In fact, it should have disappeared on its own after installing the driver, because it usually contains some unpacked installer files. But this does not happen for unknown reasons. If it doesn’t particularly bother the user, of course you can leave the Intel folder, because its size is insignificant. However, it is advisable to have an idea of ​​what is in it and what may be useful.

This directory contains two subfolders gp and logs.

Regarding the first directory, we can say that some files for the graphics core of the processor should be located in it (in this particular example, the computer has a processor installed that has a built-in video card). Based on the name of the second one, one can clearly conclude that it contains log files (reports), which can indicate the progress of driver installation, messages about possible errors and successful operations due to installation.

In this particular example, the first file turned out to be empty and there is absolutely no information in it, while in the second and third there are records of service information, essentially the progress of installing the graphics core. It can clarify little for the average user; only more advanced specialists need it.

From the information received, we can clearly conclude that there is no important information in it. When viewing the properties of the folder, it is indicated that it contains two subdirectories and three files, which indicates that the first gp directory is empty and does not represent any value. It is not clear why, but most likely in this directory, during the installation of the drivers, installation files were located, which were subsequently deleted, but these directories remained on the system disk.

It takes up very little physical space (essentially, three text files that contain service information about the progress of installing drivers for the graphics core and, possibly, the chipset). To delete this directory, just right-click on it and click on the “Delete” line.

Then a window will be displayed with a standard double-check of whether the user really wants to delete the folder with all its contents, or whether this action was called by mistake. Once the deletion is confirmed, the Intel directory is moved to the Recycle Bin, which can be emptied over time. Everything is quite easy and simple, this operation does not present any difficulties.

After the actions taken, the system does not complain about any actions, everything works as normal. And even when you turn on the computer again (), everything loads in normal mode and the display does not suffer, the processor also works at its maximum capabilities.

Finally, we can say that if the user practically does not enter the system partition, it is possible not to delete the directory in question on purpose. Although it is of no value, it takes up very little physical space and cannot in any way influence the release of space.

The free space of drive C is constantly decreasing during the operation of Windows. Regardless of the user's actions - whether he wants it or not. Temporary files, archives, cookies and browser caches and other program elements, having completed their one-time mission (updating, installation, unpacking), settle in the folders of partition C. Plus, useful megabytes and gigabytes are absorbed by some functional modules of Windows.

The first remedy for such “clutter” is a comprehensive cleanup of the C drive. It must be performed regularly and in a timely manner. Otherwise, the partition will become full, and you will not be able to fully use the OS and, accordingly, the PC. Windows will constantly interrupt your work with warning messages - "out of memory". It will become impossible to watch videos online, since the browser will not be able to save content downloaded from the server on the computer. Other troubles may also occur.

Getting started cleaning drive C: what you need to know and do

Removing any unnecessary elements from a disk is a very delicate procedure. Requires increased caution and attention from the user. “Cleaning” should not harm the OS.

Deleting files in folders is contraindicated:

  • Windows (the heart of the OS - all its components are stored here);
  • Boot (system boot files);
  • ProgramData (entirely impossible! installed applications may not launch);
  • ProgramFiles (installed software);
  • Users (user data).

Some folders that need to be “cleaned” are hidden by default, that is, they are not displayed in directories. To get to them, do the following:

1. Press the key combination “Win ​​+ E” at the same time.
2. In the Computer window, press the Alt key.

3. A horizontal menu will appear at the top of the window. Hover over the "Service" section. In the submenu, click “Folder Options...”.
4. In the Options settings, go to the View tab.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the list of options in the "Advanced Options:" section.
6. Uncheck the box next to “Hide protected system...". Click on the “Show hidden files...” radio button.

7. Click OK.

Where to start cleaning drive C?

First of all, you need to empty the trash:

  • hover over its icon;
  • click the right mouse button;
  • Select “Empty Trash” from the menu.

Large and small files, regardless of which partition they are stored in (drive D, E or C), after deletion, are sent to C:\RECYCLER, the “Trash” file. As a result, the free space of the system partition decreases. Deleting a large video file or image (for example, an iso file) when there is a shortage of extra gigabytes can easily lead to the C drive becoming full.

Advice! Before emptying the Recycle Bin, scan your desktop for unnecessary shortcuts. Their sizes are not large, but the fewer useless files there are, the better.

Disk cleanup using standard Windows utility

1. Click the Start icon.
2. In the right column, click Computer.
3. Right-click on the C drive icon. Select “Properties” from the menu.
4. In the properties panel, on the “General” tab, click the “Disk Cleanup” button.

5. Wait a little while the system checks the directories for unnecessary files.
6. Next, in the “Delete the following files” section, select which elements to delete and which to leave (check the boxes).

7. Click “Clean up system files”, and then click “OK”.

Note. The use of this utility can be limited if there are no severe “clogs” in the system. When you need to clear 2, 3, 5 or more GB, you need to perform several more procedures, which include not only deleting individual files, but also changing OS settings.

Removing unnecessary files from system folders

Quite often, users, without knowing it, “put” content and software into special OS folders designed to store various information: “Downloads”, “Images”, “My videos”, etc. Many programs and browsers by default (without changing the initial settings) send data to these directories.

Open them one by one and remove everything unnecessary. Move files that are of particular value to you to a logical partition (for example, drive D, E).

Advice! Be bold. Here you can delete any element, and Windows will not suffer from it.

Temp folder

One of the main sources of OS clogging. It contains antiviruses, drivers, applications, and games. This happens during updates and installations. After tasks are completed, the completed files remain in “Temp”. Of course, they need to be removed from there periodically.

1. On drive C, go to the “Users” folder.
2. Click the folder with your account name (username).
3. Then go to "AppData".
4. In the “Local” directory, open the “Temp” folder.
5. Empty it completely (send all files/folders to the trash).

Advice! If you use the “Total Commander” file manager: create a new tab (key combination “Ctrl” + “up arrow”) and go to the Temp folder. This way, you will always have its contents in sight.

Disabling the page file

Pagefile.sys is the OS virtual memory. When RAM (random access memory) resources run out, the system saves the out-of-place data to this file. If your PC has more than 4.6 or 8 GB of RAM, the “Pagefile.sys” container can be disabled. It takes up approximately the same amount of disk space as RAM. For example, if your PC configuration has 16 GB of RAM, then Pagefile.sys will be about the same.

To disable the page file:
1. Through “Start” (Win icon) open “Control Panel”.
2. Under System and Security, select System.
3. In the settings window, click “Advanced options...”.
4. In the System Properties panel, on the Advanced tab, click Options.
5. In the “Performance Options” option, on the “Advanced” tab, in the “Virtual Memory” section, activate “Change...”.

6. In the “Virtual Memory” window:

  • select drive C;
  • Click on the “No paging file” radio button;
  • Click the “Set” button, and then click “OK”.

7. Restart your PC.

Hibernation Disables

Hibernation is a type of sleep mode: when the user is inactive for a certain period of time, the OS saves all settings in a special file hiberfil.sys. Windows, like Pagefile.sys, reserves free space for it in C equal to the amount of RAM.

Therefore, if you do not use hibernation mode, it is better to disable it.

1. Press "Win + R".
2. Type "CMD", press "ENTER".
3. In the command line console, enter “powercfg -h off” (without quotes), then “ENTER”.
4. Restart the OS.

Using third party utilities

Cleaning the C drive can easily be “entrusted” to a special cleaning program, for example, CCleaner. It can automatically empty the recycle bin, memory dumps, clipboard, delete temporary files (cookies and cache) of popular browsers, and also perform many other operations to remove system “junk”.

Always monitor the capacity of disk C. Do not allow it to become full. Delete unnecessary files not only to free up disk space, but also for prevention.

Sometimes you need to reinstall the video driver for various reasons. First of all, this is due to the normal desire to get better performance from the video card used.

Despite the fact that we will talk about the example of AMD Catalyst (for ATI Radeon video cards), the algorithm of actions is also valid for NVidia.

The entire reinstallation process consists of 3 stages: removing the outdated video driver, downloading a new one from the manufacturer’s official website, installing a new driver.

  • Removing the old video driver. You cannot install a new driver over an old one. First you need to remove the old one. To do this, go to “Start” - “Control Panel” - “Programs and Features” and look for AMD Catalyst Install Manager there.

Select with the mouse and double-click on this line. The InstallShield Wizard will open, click "Next" and select "Quickly remove all AMD software components." Delete.

But that's not all. After that, go to drive “C” in Program Files and in Program Files (x86) and delete all folders called “AMD” and “ATI Technologies”. If the same folders are in the root of the “C” drive, then we delete them too. After that, in “Start” - enter the search bar %AppData% and in the window that appears, delete, if any, the ATI folder.

After that, if desired, launch CCleaner, go to the “Registry” tab and click “Search for problems” and then “Fix”. It also doesn’t hurt to click “Analysis” in the “Cleaning” tab and, after checking, click the “Run Cleaner” button.

Despite the fact that removing a video driver seems complicated, in fact, it is all easy and takes about 3-5 minutes. After removing the driver, the computer must be restarted.

Attention. You need to remove the AMD Catalyst video driver using the standard Windows Programs and Features tools, because, oddly enough, the excellent Revo Uninstaller program simply does not see the AMD Catalyst Install Manager.

  • The next step is to download the required version of the video driver from the official website.

We go to the site amd.com, look for “Drivers and support” and download the required (usually the newest) video driver for the current version of Windows to your hard drive.

Attention. Always download drivers from the official websites of manufacturers and developers, otherwise you risk running into viruses and other crap.

  • Now let's install. Run the downloaded driver file from your hard drive. The file will be unpacked into a temporary folder where you specify (then you can delete it) and the installation will begin automatically. At the very beginning, you will be offered a choice of automatic or manual installation.

In manual installation it will be possible to select individual modules (for advanced users). If you don’t understand anything about this, then install the quick installation.

Attention. Do not turn off the computer while installing the video driver. Installing AMD Catalyst may take 10 minutes or more; you should wait. After installation, the computer will need to restart.

After installation and reboot, the driver is ready to use. If desired, you can customize it to suit your needs. If necessary, all factory settings can be restored by going to the AMD Catalyst Control Center interface (located in the tray) and selecting "Restore Factory Settings" in the "Options".
